FREEWAY RICK ROSS: HHF DIRECTOR OF BOOKS
π Early Life and Background:
Ricky Donnell Ross was born on January 26, 1960, in Troup, Texas. He moved to South Central Los Angeles with his mother in 1963, growing up in poverty near the 110 Freeway, which later inspired his nickname. Despite a challenging environment, Ross showed early promise as a talented tennis player. He attended Dorsey High School, where he excelled in tennis and even attracted college recruitment interest. However, his dreams of a scholarship were dashed when coaches discovered he was functionally illiterate, leading him to drop out of school .
π° Rise to Drug Kingpin
In the early 1980s, Ross turned to illegal activities, initially joining a car theft ring. He entered the drug trade after meeting Nicaraguan supplier Oscar Danilo Blandón, who provided him with large quantities of cocaine. Ross pioneered the conversion of powder cocaine into crack cocaine, which was cheaper and highly addictive, fueling a devastating epidemic. At the height of his operation, he supplied cocaine to cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Seattle, and New York. Prosecutors estimated he sold over three tons of cocaine, grossing between $600 million and $900 million .
βοΈ Legal Troubles and Incarceration:
Ross faced numerous investigations, including a dedicated "Freeway Ricky Task Force" formed by Los Angeles law enforcement. He was arrested multiple times, with cases often dismissed due to police misconduct and corruption. In 1989, he was indicted on drug charges in Cincinnati and pleaded guilty, receiving a 10-year sentence. He cooperated with authorities in corruption cases against police, leading to a reduced sentence. However, in 1995, he was convicted again in a sting operation orchestrated by his former supplier, Blandón, who had become a government informant. This third felony conviction resulted in a life sentence .
π Redemption and Release:
While serving his life sentence, Ross taught himself to read and studied law. He discovered a legal technicality: his prior convictions should have counted as a single "strike" rather than multiple ones. This successfully reduced his sentence to 20 years, and he was released in 2009 after serving approximately 20 years. During his incarceration, he also learned about the CIA-Contra scandal linked to his drug supply chain, which investigative journalist Gary Webb exposed in the "Dark Alliance" series .
. βοΈ Post-Prison Life and Legacy:
Since his release, Ross has reinvented himself as an author, motivational speaker, and advocate against drug use. He published his autobiography, Freeway Rick Ross: The Untold Autobiography, and produced the documentary Freeway: Crack in the System. He also engages in community outreach, focusing on youth education and prison reform. Notably, he unsuccessfully sued rapper Rick Ross (William Leonard Roberts II) for appropriating his name. Today, he lives in Southern California with his family and works as a legal cannabis entrepreneur .
